More then a decade ago virtual tours were an innovative marketing strategy to showcase homes for sale in the Vancouver Real Estate industry. Shortly thereafter video tours came back and became the top choice in marketing homes across North America with the introduction of quad-copter (drone) video technology. What’s next you may ask? The answer is virtual reality.
Virtual reality is immersive multimedia – or computer simulated reality. In the basic sense (with the help of a headset) it allows you to view and walk around a completely computer generated space. This technology has been around for decades, however, just recently has it began to pick up in the consumer electronics industry. Virtual reality has dramatically improved and has gotten very popular in the gaming industry. This rise in popularity can be attributed to Facebook’s acquisition of a virtual reality company called “Oculus Rift” for $2 billion dollars. This allowed Oculus to have the backing of an industry Goliath, thus being able to produce a high quality product at the lowest price point.
So just imagine! You will be able to view potential homes for sale, without physically being at the property and all from the comforts of your own home or office. That’s pretty awesome don’t you think?
I’ve heard it from numerous people; virtual reality will change the way we buy homes in the future. I do see that! However I disagree with the media when they claim that you will be able to purchase a home simply by going through a virtual reality walk through of the home. You don’t purchase a home just by looking at a virtual tour or video tour do you? You physically want to look at a property before you purchase it and I see the same thing happening with virtual reality. It’s more of a marketing tool for real estate agents! Wouldn’t you agree?
However there is one place I do see people purchasing homes directly from a virtual reality walk-through. New Developments! Just imagine; you’re walking around your new condo that hasn’t even been built yet and your able to view everything from the living room, kitchen, bedrooms, the fine details and the breathtaking water views. Wouldn’t that be awesome?
